I can hardly see that there is a creature in this image, except for antennae.  (feelers, tentacles, whatever)  Either a closer view of the creature, less obscured, or better lighted would improve.

Font for text is 'rough' enough to be distracting to my eye

The concept is excellent, and the image shows a nice 
artistic touch,
but it has some serious problems.

* The text portion isn't ray-traced, and appears to have 
been applied post-process.
   This then can't contribute to the technical content of 
the entry.
* The blurring technique is unrealistic.  In effect 
everything is either
   blurred by a certain amount or not blurred at all.  With 
real blur, it is different
   for each object depending on distance.  There are 
methods to generate
   focal blur which imitate reality much better.
* You make no mention of how the creature is modeled.  
Therefore I must
  assume it's a downloaded model.  A better description 
of your technique
  would be to your benefit.
* The background is weak.
* Consider using the full 800x600.

Despite all this, I find the image striking.  With a little 
more work, this would
be a super entry.

Very, very good and original use of the theme.  The 
reproduced page is very realistic and well done.  The 
bits of soil are quite good looking.  I don't understand 
the odd proportions.  It is better not to waste screen 
space.  The organism looks more like an insect than a 
microbe, but what is visible of it suggests the description 
in the quoted passage.

The text seems somewhat detatched from the image itself - you might do well to blend it into the background or to remove it entirely and concentrate on the rest. Nice sand grains.
