Minutes of the Network Information Services Infrastructure Working Group
(NISI)

Thanks to Marsha Perrott for providing the notes from which these
minutes are derived.

The NISI Working Group enjoyed a record number of participants. We had
many non-US participants, and participants from a wide variety of
organizations.

Pat Smith is stepping down as co-chair of NISI due to increasing
responsibilities at Merit. Her leadership has been greatly appreciated
and will be sorely missed. She received thanks from the working group
and her co-chair.

NIC Profile Information

Debbie Hamilton of the DS InterNIC reported on the transition of the NIC
profile information, listing points of contact for approximately 75
NICs, from an X.500 database at Merit to a site provided by the
InterNIC. Some discussion took place regarding the preferred format and
access methods for the information, and volunteers for helping to flesh
out presentation and updating were taken. The hope is to have the new
version on-line by the Toronto IETF. The ``worker bees'' are Debbie
Hamilton, Susan Calcari, Marsha Perrott, April Marine, and Joyce K.
Reynolds.

NIC Relationships Document

The ever-pending ``NIC Relationships'' document was deemed too
complicated and perspective-specific to be worth any more effort, so the
group voted to kill it.

NIC Guidelines Document

Some discussion took place regarding the ``Network Information Center
Guidelines'' document and whether it fulfilled the gap of updating
RFC 1302. It was decided that it was worth being an Informational RFC,
but the question of whether it updated RFC 1302 was moot as if it did
not, probably no one was going to update RFC 1302 anyway. This question
will be taken up between the chair and the area director. (Subsequent
discussion between April and Joyce resulted in the decision that the
document will indeed be offered as an update to RFC 1302. April will
format it as an RFC and submit it.) Several people offered to comment
on the document and help make a subsequent version better. (April is
not sure if this document can be modified, or if there will have to be a
separate document or addendum from the group. She will check.) The
``worker bees'' are Jill Hanson, Randy Conrad, Ann Cooper, Susan
Calcari, Debbie Hamilton, Suzanne Smith, Jodi Chu, and Marsha Perrott
(also thanks to Jill Foster for her comments).

Outreach

The group finished up with an interesting discussion of outreach and
trying to define user needs (customer needs assessment). It was decided
to try to actually telephone contacts in the NIC profiles list, which
would have the double advantage of working on updating the information
and finding out if there were any needs NISI should be addressing.
Volunteers were recruited to figure out what the group would like to
know and to do the calling. This effort will form the basis of deciding
future NISI tasks, if any. The ``worker bees'' are Susan Calcari,
Barbara Jennings, Jodi Chu, Janet Marcisak, and April Marine.
